Welcome to Ambiyan in Historical Unionville!
Located in the heart of historic Unionville, Ambiyan is a beautiful Indian restaurant that serves traditional and contemporary Indian cuisine. I had to give it a try!
So Renée and I asked our friends Bill and Sara to join us there for dinner. Bill and Sara really enjoy Indian food (and we really enjoy their company) so we thought they would be the perfect companions for this evening. I asked Renée to help me write this review because she tends to use more adjectives than I do (which is probably a good thing when you're trying to describe food and places).
Located in the heart of historic Unionville, Ambiyan is a beautiful Indian restaurant that serves traditional and contemporary Indian cuisine. The dining room is nicely decorated and I noticed that I immediately felt calm and relaxed sitting there. It must have something to do with the wood accents, exposed brick, neutral colours, nice lighting and comfortable seats.
Owner, Joe Gill was on hand to make sure everyone was well looked after. He and his nephew, Joe Jr. own and operate Ambiyan.
After a round of pommegranite martinis, we tore into the menu. It's really common in Indian restaurants to order several dishes to share. I really like this concept for obvious reasons! The menu had lots of items from all camps (meat, fish & seafood and vegetarian). I wanted everything but we decided on Fish & Crab Tikki () and Tandoori Chicken () for starters. Excellent choices!
For our main course, we went with Chicken Tikka Masala (), Saag Paneer ()), Biryani () and many helpings of the most incredible baked naan. Creme caramel with cardamon was the winning choice for dessert. Delicious! If your mouth isn't watering by now it should be...this food was awesome!
Our entrees were served in beautiful silver bowls and each one was colourfully garnished. The freshly ground spices made the fragrance of each dish outstanding. It wasn't long before Renée and Sara stopped using their utensils and soaked up every last bit of sauce with their bread. I'm not sure if they had too much wine to drink or if that was their way of complimenting the chef.
Ambiyan also has a nice wine list and lots of different beers (next time I'm going to try the Kingfisher beer from India). It certainly adds a twist to the Main Street dining scene in Unionville and has one of the best patios for outdoor dining bar none! Renée and I are hooked...now if we could only get the kids to try it!!!
If you haven't dined at Ambiyan, I highly recommend it (you'd be wise to call ahead for reservations (905) 480-0094). Tell Joe I sent you!
